Civil society; ochlocracy; democracy; populism; political participation; tyranny of the majority

The article examines how civil society may develop ochlocratic, populist, and anti-democratic practices when democratic institutions fail to address social demands. It argues that demagoguery, mass mobilization, and the tyranny of the majority can transform civil society from a democratic corrective into a threat to democracy.
